We first met Shawn Curran while working on plans for the transformation of our home from a story and a half cape to a colonial of two full stories.
Having lived through a previous renovation, this time, we were moving out of our home for up to a year, so it was important to stay organized, and to keep as close as possible to the timeframe and budget we planned for. We asked our architect to recommend a contractor who could communicate effectively while facing the the day to day decisions and surprises that inevitably present themselves during a project with the complexities of the one we were about to undertake.
Shawn and his crew came through for us on all counts and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Over the course of our project, from the first day when Eugene and Andrew tore the deck off the back of the house, through to the day when they hoisted the cupola with Don’s weathervane onto the roof, everyone from the subcontractors to Shawn’s regulars did a fabulous job, conducting themselves as professionals, taking pride in what they were doing while providing workmanship of the highest quality.
Just as important to us is that we have been able to continue to call upon Shawn to help us maintain our home. He continues to be available with solutions or referrals for any question we can come up with.

Shawn Curran did a great job rehabbing our 1860’s house after a major fire. He does very high-quality work, he is honest, and he communicates well. He understood the whole complex project clearly from the start, and his cost estimate was detailed and easy to understand. In an old house you inevitably encounter surprises during a reconstruction; Shawn came up with excellent alternatives and solutions when we discovered things that changed the initial plan. He worked well with the architect, getting advice about significant design changes but not using up too much of the architect’s time. His crew and subcontractors took pride in their work, and everyone who worked for him is someone I was happy to have in my house. Ken and I are really enjoying the house now. I first used Curran & Sons Construction on a large commercial renovation project in Manchester-by- the-Sea, MA in 2014. I had not met or used Shawn prior to this and he was selected based on his presentation, references and proposal. I was very satisfied with the quality of the work performed by Shawn and the Curran & Sons team; they stood by the work they performed, even returning well past the job completion date to address minor issues related to material defects.

Shawn and his team did a fantastic job on the renovation project in my historic home. From structural repairs that were uncovered at demolition to the final finish work, the quality and attention to detail were amazing. Every company he sub-contracted with was also of the same high caliber.
His millwork shop, Northshore Custom Woodworking was great. They took an idea based on a glass door and a sketch on a scrap of paper and created a beautiful built-in china cabinet that looks like it was part of the original dining room.

Now that the addition is finished, I wanted to tell you how pleased I am with the end result. You and your crew did a stellar job. Always at the house early and staying late. The craftmanship is top-notch, you finished ahead of schedule and came in under budget. Truly a rarity these days. I also appreciate the fact that the job site was orderly at the end of each day and the pains you took to make sure there was minimal disruption to my family during the project. I could not be happier. Thank you very much for a job extremely well done.
We hired Curran & Sons Construction to add a 2nd story to and renovate the 1st floor of our ranch home. Shawn and his team did a fantastic job with the project, exceeding our expectations in all regards. The quality of their work is excellent. They remained within the budget. They completed the job when they promised they would and, maybe more importantly, they didn’t leave a single task unfinished.
During our renovation, Cape Ann received a tremendous amount of rain in the spring. Most basements in the area were flooding, including ours. Unfortunately, we used our basement to store a great number of our possessions during the project. One late night, we went to the house to check on things and found Shawn Curran in the basement setting up 2 of his own pumps to help reduce the water level and protect our things. This act of genuine concern really left an impact on us and is the main reason we continue to tell our friends and neighbors to call Curran & Sons if they ever have any construction needs.
We have since called on Curran & Sons – and will continue to do so – for smaller projects because we know that they will be done correctly, efficiently and with the care and quality that we expect for our home.
Curran and Sons recently completed a total house renovation for us, helping transform our 1970’s center-entrance colonial into a Greek Revival Farmhouse. At every step of the way, Shawn and his staff were professional and considerate, and brought the highest workmanship to the job. Shawn, Dean, Eugene, Andrew, Andy and all of the subcontractors were the greatest. Changes were made, construction challenges were met and overcome, and in spite of it all we were able to move back into our house on the agreed upon date. It seems this kind of timeliness is a rarity in the construction business, and so for this and everything else we’re glad we chose Curran!
